“It’s a very complex wine for being a “simple” southern Italian red”

It literally says VOLCANO on the label, so it was hard for us to ignore this exceptional little southern Italian red, which is a nice inky counterpoint to the lighter Sicilian red in this release. This reminds me that Aglianico is not a grape to be taken lightly. It’s rich, full of texture, and communicates the volcanic slopes of Vulture where it’s grown.

Vulture is named for the Monte Vulture, a large extinct volcano that’s part of southern Italy’s hot spot, which also includes Mt. Etna and Mt. Vesuvius, which are both currently active.

On the nose this brings baked red and black cherry, tart black plums, smoky dried herbs like marjoram and fennel, and sensations of amaro and vermouth. It’s a very complex wine for being just a “simple” southern Italian red. I’ll be drinking lots of this wine this year.

Music: “The Volcano Song” by The Budos Band

I wanted to go full Volcano with this one. Great upbeat energy, and fire. This wine brings the heat and we needed a song that brings it too!

Sauteed Sausage with pepper and onion

This Aglianico has awesome stewed fruit notes, so a dish with some mild sweetness works really nicely.
