La Comarcal DelMoro Garnacha 2020

La Comarcal DelMoro Garnacha 2020

Grapes: 85% Garnacha, 15% Syrah

ABV: 13.5%

Region: Valencia, Spain

Winemaker: Javi Revert and Victor Marqués

Viniculture: Organic farming. Delmoro Tinto comes from vineyards near the village of Venta del Moro between 15 and 50 years old. The garnacha that makes up 85% of the blend comes from a 4ha single-vineyard called Guindal planted in 1987 at 600m. Bush-trained, old-vine syrah makes up the remainder of the blend.

Winemaking: After a rigorous selection in the vineyard, each variety is hand-harvested separately and 70% of the grapes are destemmed and crushed, while 30% are vinified as whole bunches with stem inclusion. Garnacha and syrah are fermented separately in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts, followed by eight months aging in stainless steel for garnacha and concrete tanks for syrah. The two varieties are then blended and rested before a very light filtration, but no fining, before bottling.

“behind the sunny ripe fruit, diced herbs show up”

Jackson’s Notes

Every Circle release includes one wine that I’ve never had before it’s presented to us at the warehouse. This Comarcal Delmoro is the one for this release. I’m a huge fan of aromatic, elegant Garnacha, and it just took one taste to get excited about this wine.

Comarcal is a project started by two friends, Javi Revert and Victor Marqués. It takes its name from Venta del Moro, the village where the grapes are grown, high above sea level. Their goal in starting Comarcal was to express local grapes with regenerative agriculture, using natural yeast and no chemicals.

Garnacha is one of my favorite grapes, and since it’s a Spanish grape, I’m always on the hunt for more dynamic expressions. When old vines are grown at high altitude by capable hands like Javi and Victor’s, the results can be stellar. Altitude can set a deeper and more intense red color for Grenache, a typically light grape. Proximity to the sun gives stronger pigmentation to grape skins.

This wine leads with ripe strawberry flavors. Behind the sunny ripe fruit, diced herbs like thyme, rosemary and oregano show up. This is juicy and palate-filling without being heavy. Pair it with  fresh spring dishes that can highlight the herbal edge of Garnacha.

Music: “2009” By Orion’s Ghost

This wine needed a song with soul, groove and power. I recently discovered Orion’s Belt on Spotify and think they’re pretty incredible.
