“lemony, citrusy tang…palate-washing effervescence”

Jackson’s Note: It’d be very hard to have a conversation about the wines of the Iberian Peninsula without a firm nod to the Basque Country’s Txakolinas. These are mostly produced as high-acid whites that have a strong local tie to the local pintxo/tapas culture. This Gaintza is a high-quality example, adding depth and complexity to a style of wine that often just draws the line at cheap and cheerful. This is the product of generations of work by the Lazkano family to farm sustainably in a region where it’s difficult to do so, being wet and close to the ocean.

I love this wine for its lemony, citrusy tang, and its gentle, palate-washing effervescence. If Crunchy Red Fruit is about finding wines that are eminently drinkable and approachable, Txakolina is an extension of our beliefs that wine ought to be something for everyone, and should be at home with any cuisine on the table.

From Ole & Obrigado Imports: Bright green-yellow. On the nose, high toned aromas of lemon, quince, green apple and sorrel are overlaid with sea spray and stony mineral notes. On the palate, puckering acidity and effervescence lend a practically gulpable appeal, with bright meyer lemon, apple and green herbs. Finishes salty and clean, begging for another sip.

From our chef partner, Marti Buckley, on the category of Txakoli wine: “Cool, crisp and refreshing. Easy to drink, with sour and salty notes.”
