The flagship wine, the 2008 Gemstone (100% Cabernet Sauvignon even though it is a proprietary red) is a flamboyant, opulent, medium to full-bodied effort revealing stunning concentration, purity and balance. Aged 22 months in 100% new French oak, it reveals elegance, perfume and richness along with a layered mouthfeel. Already drinking well, it should evolve for 15 or more years.” Robert Parker

Orin Swift Polermo Cabernet Sauvignon

Aromas of dark, brooding fruit with subtle French oak in the background lead into a smooth entry of ripe cherry and fig. The mid-palate is subtle and stretches with loads of bright acidity and candied cassis. Layers of stone fruit and ribena lead into a round, supple, lingering finish of integrated soft tannins that roll on and on. This wine is amazing now and has another 8 to 10 years in it at least!

78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc

Only Two Cases Available and Worth Every Dime!

Mercury Head is the slang term for the authentic Liberty Dime which serves as the wine’s “front label”. As a kid Dave Phinney collected these dimes. Years later, after getting one with some change, he was reminded how striking they are.

2008 Mercury Head marks the eighth vintage of what we consider to be our best Cabernet Sauvignon lots. This vintage was all about low yields and highly concentrated fruit. Small berries and smaller clusters got super ripe while retaining bright acidity and mature tannins. Our aim is to have subtle oak nuances that won’t dominate the fruit, only accent the aroma. You could open one tonight or age it for up to 10 years. Ripe aromas of cassis, violet and boysenberry lead into a lush mouth-coating entry. The mid-palate has hints of dark cherry amd bramble fruit framed by bright acidity and subtle structure. The finish is soft and extremely long with chains of ripe tannins.

The most highly sought after Spanish wine is Back! The 2009 Clio, from Jumilla, is 70% Monastrell (Mourvedre) and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. Clio boasts Chris Ringland (who made Penfolds Grange for 20 or so years) as their winemaker. An opulent, powerful wine with sweet oak, espresso, creme de cassis, layers of flavor and an incredibly long finish. Clio will grab you by the nose, then coat your mouth and take you on a long ride. They’re never around for long. Big, full-fruited reds love densely flavored dishes. Braised beef with red wine reduction makes a fine match. Definitely wild with wild boar and yummy with chocolate, too.

The ’09 La Storia Cabernet Sauvignon benefited from the cool growing season. Lower sugars resulted in 13.9% alcohol in the final blend and a much more balanced wine than anticipated. The wine is typical Alexander Valley Cabernet with sweet ripe cherry and blueberry on the nose, with a slight dark licorice and brown sugar nuance. The moderate oak contributes traces of vanilla, cocoa powder and toast. The mouth feel is fresh, juicy and balanced with obvious but soft tannins. The finish is long and very satisfying.

From the Bierzo region of Spain, this is a great example of old world meets new!

Alvaro Palacios is consistently heralded for creating some of the top wines of the modern era. One of nine children born to the owners of Rioja’s respected
Palacios Remondo, Alvaro studied in Bordeaux and worked under Jean-Pierre Moueix at Chateau Petrus. Constantly striving to make Spain’s greatest wines, Alvaro has placed considerable focus on Bierzo with their incredibly steep hillside vineyards, distinctive terroirs and most importantly, ancient vineyards of Mencia vines.

His Petalos 2009 is crafted from 100% Mencia, assembled from old hillside and hilltop vines from across Bierzo’s western edge. The wine is vinified for immediate appeal, but it retains the estate’s signature finesse and restraint. It’s a wine of incredible clarity and finesse, and a unbelievable value for $23.95
